Metzenbaum to be honored

at Cleveland HRC dinner

Former Senator Howard Metzenbaum will be honored for his exemplary support of the lesbian and gay community at the Third Annual Human Rights Campaign North Coast Dinner, to be held Saturday, April 13, at the

Metzenbaum

Marriott Society Center in Cleveland. The dinner, which will bring together members and friends of Northern Ohio's gay and lesbian community, is expected to attract a record 400 attendees in this critical election year.

"Senator Metzenbaum has been a staunch supporter of gay and lesbian issues on Capitol Hill,” said Georgiann Pace, co-chair of the HRC dinner committee. "In fact, these issues were very much in jeopardy during the first session of the 103rd Congress, Senator Metzenbaum's final session before he retired."

That watershed session saw the Senate vote to confirm openly lesbian and gay nominees to positions in the executive branch. In addition, Congress passed record levels of funding for AIDS and women's health research, and both the House and Senate passed the Hate Crimes Statistics Act, the first congressional action to ever explicitly include lesbian and gay Ameri-

cans.

will be taken into consideration as we prepare for our annual fund-raiser."

This year, to enhance the participation of African-Americans in event planning and attendance, Berteena Rollins and Marcus Lowe were recruited to reach out to the African American community and to serve as advisors to the HRC committee.

But the Cleveland community struggles with a legacy of racial division. "Even in 1996, African Americans and whites socialize separately,” said Rollins. “While African-Americans attend events organized by whites, Caucasians rarely attend our events. We have yet to realize our goal of inclusion and unity."

Marcus Lowe, project director for Men of Color Concerned About AIDS, shares these concerns. "The Cleveland community has difficulty accepting the national focus of the fundraiser," said Lowe. "People I talk to ask how the money raised will benefit the local African-American community."

"We are concerned about the historical split in the community,” said Georgiann Pace, co-chair of the local HRC. "We will continue to concern ourselves with the needs of all gay and lesbian people." However, adds Pace,

Keynote speaker at the Third Annual HRC North Coast Dinner will be Elizabeth Birch, executive director of the Human Rights Campaign. Birch recently challenged Republican candidate Patrick J. Buchanan to defend his anti-gay statements in a public debate.

Founded in 1980, The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian and gay organization, with members throughout the country. The Cleveland committee of HRC, which consists of dedicated community members, is structured to ensure the participation of women, men and people of color.

"We insist that each sub-committee of HRC be facilitated by both a man and a woman," said Gregg Levine, co-chair of the event. “This ensures that all perspectives

"we believe that it is essential to focus our energy nationally. Lesbian and gay people have traditionally worked on a local, grassroots level. It is now of paramount importance to have a national voice."

Although she supports the concerns of the local African-American community, Rollins agrees with Pace. "For me, it is better to work with organizations as they are. I prefer to confront misperceptions as they occur and correct them.”

All proceeds from he dinner will go to the Human Rights Campaign. Tickets are $150 per person after April 1. For reservations and more information, call 216-779-6444.
